It’s world cup season and what a world cup it’s been! I have to say that I can’t remember any other world cup producing so many memes. But then again, the Neymar rolling memes from 2018 still exist.
I can’t say it’s been my favourite world cup, but it’s definitely been a funny one. And the main reason for that is: Erling Haaland. This one Norwegian player has been responsible for, and actively enabled, so many funny memes. From people editing the image of him chasing down his opponent (seen left), to the re-imagining of that one White Chicks scene featuring him and Vini Jr., to the Majin Buu comparisons, and all the blond-haired people posting themselves trying to mimic his walk. It’s been very amusing. More so because Haaland himself has been enabling and supporting these memes of himself. Gotta love a guy who can appreciate jokes about himself.
What hasn’t been amusing, though? A certain world leader. Yeah, you guessed it. Trump. I think the whole footballing world was in complete fury after he contacted FIFA to get a US red card revoked. Don’t come at me if you’re a Trump apologist. I will not hear any of it lmao.
As a Scottish-Australian person, I was paying close attention to both respective teams—as they both qualified to the group stage. Australia made it to the round of 32, but lost to Egypt in the end. Scotland wasn’t so lucky and didn’t make it past the group stage. It was nice being able to watch both teams while it lasted. Now I’m going for Norway, hoping they can beat England for a spot in the semis 🤞.
What have you made of this year’s World Cup so far (if you’ve been watching)?
